Material World

Have we as a human race gotten so self absorbed by materialism? Are our children a result of this twisted behavior? Well if you look around throughout our society, advertisements, conversation adults and children have the answer is absolutely yes.

I work very hard to humble my children by reminding them that their are people that have less than we have and they should be thankful and appreciate all that they have. I am not saying that we should not strive or desire the "good life" but I am saying that we should never be so self absorbed that our materialistic desires supersede our human duty to help one another and very importantly become bitter due to not being able to keep up with the Jones of the world.

The other day I promised a child that would buy them sneakers when I received my paycheck. This child was wearing unbelievably worn out sneakers to school every day. Since I gave away most of my new and slightly used fall/winter shoes away, I needed to go shoe shopping for myself. This is something I rarely do which is put myself first. Especially since I saw a pair of my favorite name brand boots that I wanted, however, my promise to this child was more important than my materialistic desires.  It was not as if I wore worn out like the child was wearing to school. Naturally, I bought the sneakers the child wanted. To see his face light up when he put the sneakers on gave me a warm feeling inside.

I had to share this with others to say we has humans should be there for one another. Our desire for materialistic things should never overshadow doing what's right especially for someone else.  This is something we must teach our children. I see senseless crimes on the news for material things. When a person leaves this earth, these material things are left behind.  You can't take it with you. These things go in and out of style constantly. Why does it hold such great importance in this society?
